Although we typically post recipes here at Healthy Tasty Cheap , I wanted to take a moment to make a public service announcement about a huge and important bakesale happening this Saturday, April 2, 2011. It is a great opportunity to indulge in something unhealthy and very tasty for a great cause. All of the proceeds from this event will go to Peace Winds Japan to help the victims of the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11th.
This bakesale is actually many simultaneous events happening throughout the US at bakeries, restaurants, and other businesses featuring baked goods made by some of the most talented professional and amateur bakers around. They are still looking for bakers, volunteer staff, and of course, people to purchase treats. To find out if there is a location near you visit http://bakesaleforjapan.com/category/locations. I will be baking up several dozen Momofuku Compost Cookies to donate at the Pizzaiolo location in Oakland, CA.
I’m very proud of how the blogosphere and local merchants have banded together to promote this cause. When I signed up to be a part of this event there were only four locations listed, today there are 40 and more are being added each day. The organizers of this event raised $23,000 at their Bakesale for Haiti last year, and they are hoping to double, triple, or quadruple that number this time. I would love to see that dream become a reality, it’s the least that we can do to help.
If you are not in the US and would still like to participate, you can make a monetary donation here. You can also check out the Online Bakesale for Japan that is happening on Wednesday March 30th.
