I have been making some changes in my diet.
While I usually keep to a mostly raw, mostly vegan diet, I was finding that this was the wrong thing for my body. After months of trying, getting the flu on and off, having terrible mood swings and not feeling like myself I decided to make a change.
I stumbled across a book called Potatoes not Prozac and confirmed that my drastic mood changes are because I’m sugar sensitive.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been highly affected, and someone addicted to sugar. Even though some of this sugar is healthy – bananas, mangos, dates – too much of it sounds me into a downward spiral of highs and lows. I feel like superwoman one day, and the lowest low the next.
The book I read focuses on balancing your brain chemistry with three meals a day – all including protein. I avoid protein like the plague, so this was a real challenge for me. But little by little, I’m adding some vegetarian sources of protein, and organic animal proteins into my meals.
The result? My mood feels stable, my energy is consistent, and my sleep is more solid.
Meals like this comforting spinach and chicken salad are perfect mid-day and keep me focused and happy at work.
Enjoy! And feel free to sub chicken and egg for your favourite vegetarian/vegan proteins!
- Spinach
- Hard boiled egg
- Pan seared chicken breast
- Tomatoes
- Broccoli
- Artichoke hearts
- Rosemary
- Fresh lemon
- Assemble, squeeze lemon over top (or dressing of choice) and enjoy!

looks like my own daily lunch, not going to lie. except the artichoke (but i bought one today at the grocer’s!)
Yay! How do you eat your artichokes? I love steaming a whole one and dipping it in olive oil, lemon and salt!!
oh and i love red onion in salads! yay!
well said girl, our diet is always changing. We have finally realized our bodies do not like sugar, but we are not as strong as you and cannot seem to fully get rid of it. We have added eggs back and love it! And fish too. We have a mix of raw and cooked foods and seem to do alright. Not perfect, but a work in progress
Thanks ladies, it’s a been long journey but worth feeling this much better!
