Healthy Frosted Malt

Today’s comfort food is inspired by my favourite childhood comfort food: frosted malt.

My brothers and I used to walk down to the candy store for dessert and frosted malt was my favourite.  I loved how long it lasted, that it melted so slowly, and the texture once half of it began to melt but the centre was still nice and frozen.

But to be totally honest…this was inspired by me craving chocolate and wanting to avoid sugar. So a thick smoothie with cacao, chocolate protein powder, avocado, chia, almond milk and some yogurt was born.

Upon first bite I thought…’FROSTED MALT!’. It was so simple but so decadent and delicious I might eat this every day from now on.

Healthy, energizing ingredients, but tastes like this:

After my first batch yesterday I made another one today replacing the avocado with pureed pumpkin. I’m happy to say it was equally delicious!

I know what I’m reaching for when I need a sweet treat now!

I blended it with some ice in my Vitamix for an extra creamy texture. If you’re working with a regular blender, blend baby blend. And let me know how it turns out!

This looks so delish! The maca?! I bet it gives it a very interesting flavor. I have barley malt and milk malt in my pantry (one of a zmillion things I want to ‘trial’) and I’ve been meaning to make something like that with them. I often do make a malt, but it’s with Carnation malted milk (just a T or two) but I believe that has sugar. Thanks for the great recipe ideas!
